You Don't Need a Rice Cooker
What You'll Need
- 1 cup long grain rice or any white rice
- 2 cups water
- Pinch of salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
How to Make It
- Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan.
- Add the rice and stir once.
- Mix in salt and butter if using.
- Once boiling again, cover and lower the heat.
- Simmer gently until water is absorbed, about 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let sit covered for 10 more minutes.
Final Touch
- Fluff with a fork and serve warm.

The secret is the 10 minute rest off the heat. Trying to finish it over heat will lead to clumping at best, or scorching at worst. Pam’s method finishes cooking with the residual heat.
I’ve cooked rice like this for years. I just followed the simple directions on the rice package. Always comes out perfect. I’m surprised every time I hear someone say they can’t make rice. Thanks for all of your delicious recipes.
