Flavor-Packed Black Bean Burgers (Easy & Oven-Baked!)

What You'll Need

  • 2 (15 oz) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1/2 cup mixed red and green bell peppers
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons beef tallow
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon Pam's Prep All Purpose Seasoning
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup feta cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Burger buns

How to Make It

1. Dry the Beans:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C).
  • Spread rinsed beans on a paper towel-lined tray, pat dry with a second towel.
  • Remove top towel and bake beans for 10 minutes until slightly dried. Let cool.

2. Sauté the Veggies:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté garlic, onion, and bell peppers until softened and lightly browned.
  • Drain and pat off excess moisture.

3. Blend the Mixture:

  • In a food processor, combine sautéed veggies, cumin, Pam’s Prep seasoning, Worcestershire, BBQ sauce, eggs, and beef tallow.
  • Pulse until just combined.
  • Add 3/4 of the black beans and breadcrumbs. Pulse again briefly.
  • Add the remaining beans and pulse once more. Do not overprocess.

4. Form & Bake the Patties:

  • Form patties using about 1/2 cup of mixture per patty.
  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Increase oven temp to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 10 minutes.
  • Flip burgers and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Optional: Top with cheese in the last 2 minutes of baking.

5. Toast the Buns:

  • Toast buns in a skillet with butter and remaining olive oil until golden.

I was intrigued with this burger being made with black beans, until I saw beef tallow. Being vegetarian this is something we don’t eat. Sounds good otherwise.
